The Dodgers and Angels meet for the first two games of this season’s Freeway Series. While both teams had things in cruise control a month ago, leading their respective divisions, the Freeway has hit gridlock in both directions lately.

Both teams are sputtering and desperately trying to keep their engines running. Let’s look at the MLB odds from the best sportsbooks

Los Angeles Angels vs. Los Angeles Dodgers

Tuesday, June 14, 2022 – 10:10 PM EDT at Dodger Stadium

The Angels endured a 14-game losing streak that cost their manager his job and knocked the team out of first. They leave Anaheim for a seven-game road trip having won two of their last 16 games. The Angels are now closer to last place than first in the American League West and are 3.5 games back in the Wild Card race.

The Dodgers aren’t worried about the Wild Card standings yet, but, after leading the NL West since the start of May, their lead is down to a mere half-game following a weekend sweep at the hands of the Giants. The Dodgers have lost six of their last eight games.

Getting Well

The Angels hit the skids after their starting lineup was hit by a series of injuries. Things seem to be taking a turn for the better in the sick bay in recent days, however.

On Friday. Anthony Rendon returned to the field for the first time since May 26 after suffering a wrist injury. The following day, Mike Trout made his return after missing three games with a groin problem.

Now, outfielder Taylor Ward, who has been on the injured list with a hamstring strain, appears to be ready to be activated before Tuesday’s game. He took batting practice and ran the bases on Sunday, passing his final test.

Assuming Ward returns as scheduled, Tuesday will be the first time since May 20 that the Angels have had their top four hitters (the three injured players and Shohei Ohtani) in the lineup together.

“We had a rough stretch, but I think we’re getting our mojo back a little bit,” first baseman Jared Walsh said. “When we’re clicking on all cylinders, I think we’re one of the best teams in the league.”

Noah Syndergaard will start the Freeway Series for the Angels on Tuesday. He’s 4-4 with a 3.69 ERA. He’s lost his last two starts, however, and three of the last four. Syndergaard has also struggled on the road this season, going 1-3, 7.88 away from Anaheim.

Power Outage

The Dodgers’ pitching staff has been hit hard by injuries, most recently All-Star starter Walker Buehler, who strained his elbow in his last start. The slump, however, can be pinned primarily on the offense

On May 27, the Dodgers led MLB or were close to the top in most offensive categories. Since then, the bats have not responded. L.A. was averaging 5.7 runs per game, a figure that has fallen to 3.5 over the last two weeks plus. Over the weekend, the Dodgers managed four runs in three games and were shut out for the second time in the last six.

After hitting .254 with a .771 OPS through late May, the Dodgers have managed just .234 and .685 since. The Dodgers have also had the third worse average with runners in scoring position this month, and Mookie Betts and Freddie Freeman have both slumped since the start of June.

“I just think that the urgency to do whatever it takes to win that night, on the offensive side, hasn’t been there,” manager Dave Roberts said after the Giants’ sweep was complete.

The Dodgers will start righthander Tony Gonsolin on Tuesday. He’s 7-0 on the year with a 1.58 ERA this season and is the team’s most dominant remaining starting pitcher. He’s struck out at least five batters in each of the last seven starts.

The Picks

So what are our best bets? After a rough road trip, the Dodgers are home, rested after a Monday off day, and have their current ace on the mound. The Angels are getting back to full power, but Gonsolin should still have the edge. I’m taking the Dodgers in a low-scoring game with my MLB picks.
