Analysis

Editor’s Note: The author still finds value on the Rays up to odds of -180.

Key Facts

  • Tampa Bay’s impressive 13-0 start to the season puts them in rare company, with only two teams since 1900 achieving this feat, showcasing their exceptional performance.
  • The Rays’ dominant +71 run differential highlights their ability to outscore and outplay their opponents consistently, surpassing the comeback victories of previous teams with similar records.
  • Tampa Bay’s well-rounded roster excels both offensively and defensively, with their offense leading in key statistical categories and their pitching staff performing at a high level, making them a formidable team to beat.

Unexpectedly, Tampa Bay came roaring out of the gate winning their first 13 games of the season. Because few like to give credit where credit is due, naysayers were whining about the Rays “playing weak competition”. That of course doesn’t hold up because only two teams going back to 1900 had started 13-0 and suffice more than a few clubs started with lesser competition and did not come close to what Tampa Bay accomplished.

  • Rays +71 Run Differential

What makes what Tampa Bay did so impressive is they dominated teams with a +71 run differential. Both Atlanta (1982) and Milwaukee (1987) had some crazy come-from-behind wins that were unimaginable when they went 13-0.

Rays Will Be a Devil of Team to Beat (Intentional Play On Words)

Across the board, the Rays’ offense has been the best in baseball and their pitching is stifling. That is what sets them apart, in hitting stats, almost anything you want to follow from runs, batting average to wOBA, Tampa Bay is first or second. The same is also true of the entire pitching staff, be it starters or relievers. And if you look at the age of manager Kevin Cash’s roster, his players are in or entering their prime years.

The New York Yankees and Toronto Blue Jays still have solid clubs, but just like last year, both have flaws that are very similar to last year.

For our money, Tampa Bay is built to win now and they still have a couple of starting pitchers like Tyler Glasnow coming back soon. Other teams might have more individual talent, but how this roster has been assembled is a thing of beauty.

Analysis

Winning bets is not only about who you pick, it can also be about the money you save on making bad choices. That is the case with the Los Angeles Angels.

Poor Ownership Has Ruined the Angels

Ownership and organizations make winning teams. Owner Arte Moreno bought the Angels from Disney in 2002 and they immediately won a World Series. That was the high mark for the franchise and the Halos have not had a winning season since 2015.

It has been a parade of mismanagement through the years, with Moreno meddling with GMs, weak draft choices, and god-awful free agent signings like Josh Hamilton, C. J. Wilson, Albert Pujols, Justin Upton, and now Anthony Rendon.

Where Is the Bright Spot for 2023?

Despite having arguably the two best players in the sport and at worst the Top 6, in Mike Trout and Shohei Ohtani, this club is not built for success. The cast around this twosome seems to be improved over past years, yet, if you break down the starting position outside of center fielder and DH, essentially the Angels rank no better than third in the vast majority of them even in their own division.

Moving over to the pitching staff, even with Ohtani, the starters rank in the 20s in the majors in most key metrics. The bullpen has decent numbers on the surface, however, they have blown about half their save chances to start the season and they have lost twice as many games as they have won.

Instead of betting on the Halos, give the money to charity, at least it’s a tax write-off.

What are MLB futures?

Regardless of if you want to bet on the Chicago White Sox in the All-Star Game, Tampa Bay Rays, San Francisco Giants, Chicago Cubs or any other team out in the field, the experts at Bookmakers Review are here to provide you with the facts about betting on Major League Baseball.

Futures bets in MLB futures are bets on events that will take place in the future. In how they pertain to MLB, they are wagers on events that will take place during the upcoming baseball season. Bettors have made MLB futures popular because they allow them to place bets on outcomes that will not be determined until further on in the season, like the World Series winner, divisional winners and individual player awards.

How do MLB futures bets operate?

Future bets are wagers on events that have not yet taken place, or as the name refers to, in the future. They are typically made prior to the season starting, and the futures odds change as the season progresses. When you place a future bet, you are essentially locking in the odds at the time you make the bet. For example, if you place a bet on a team to win the World Series at the beginning of the season when they have long odds, you stand to win a lot of money if they end up winning.

However, if you wait until later in the season when the team is performing well and the odds have shortened, you will not stand to win as much money. Future bets can be made on a variety of results that can happen on the field, which we will dive more into below.

What are the different types of MLB futures bets?

The MLB futures market consists of but is not limited to the following:

  1. World Series winner: This wager is placed on which team will achieve victory in the World Series at the end of the season.
  2. League winner: This is a bet on which team will win their respective league championship (either the American League or the National League).
  3. Division winner: This is a bet on which team will win their division within their specific league.
  4. MVP winner: This is a bet on which player will win the Most Valuable Player award for their league at the end of the season.
  5. Cy Young winner: Bettors can wager on which pitcher will win the Cy Young award for their league at the end of the season.
  6. Home run leader: Bettors bet on which player will hit the most home runs during the regular season.
  7. Rookie of the Year: This is a bet on which rookie player will achieve the Rookie of the Year award for their league at the end of the season.

Bettors have popularized these bets because they offer the potential for a large payout if the bettor accurately anticipates an outcome. It’s imperative to conduct research and stay aware of the latest news and developments in order to make informed bets that raise your chances of winning.

Why are MLB futures a key aspect of baseball betting?

MLB futures are a key aspect of baseball betting because they offer bettors the chance to wager on outcomes that will not be determined until much later in the season. This enables bettors who have a comprehensive understanding of the game and its teams to use their knowledge to their advantage and potentially win big.

Additionally, because the odds on future bets change as the season progresses, bettors who are able to predict how a team will perform can place bets at more favorable odds and potentially win more money.

How can you use MLB futures to set yourself up for success?

Bettors can increase the likelihood of receiving higher payouts through MLB futures bets by shopping around for the best odds, taking a long-term approach, hedging their bets, factoring in the timing of their bets and managing their bankroll. These strategies encompass being patient, conducting research, remaining on top of the latest news and developments along with placing educated wagers. By adhering to these strategies, bettors can set themselves up for betting success.

Choosing a top-tier sportsbook like the ones in our reviews is also a good way to add to the potential of cashing out big. A trustworthy online betting site that can be trusted to deliver your money when it’s time to cash out will serve you far better than a shady, scammy site that has ample customer complaints.
