Integrity issues surrounding Betfair operating in Australia sparked in the wake of the defeat of two odds-on favourites, who had been backed to lose for “unusually high” amounts of money with the controversial betting exchange at Newcastle harness racing meeting last Saturday night.

Greyhound and Harness Racing Regulatory Authority Chief Steward James Perry said the growing popularity of betting exchanges meant monitoring must be stepped up to ensure the integrity of the sport.

“Given Betfair is becoming a popular form of betting we\’ll be scrutinising it more closely,” Perry said.

Currently, it is common practice for the GHRRA to monitor every Harold Park Friday night meeting and selected meetings from the major harness centres, but Racing NSW Chief Steward Ray Murrihy suggested it was his experience that the lesser race meetings should be closely watched.

Betfair spokesman Mark Davies said that if the betting exchange was granted a license in Australia, one of the conditions would be that the names and addresses of account holders could be disclosed to racing officials if required.
