Cano was signed by Seattle in 2013 for 10 years $240M. Traded to mets in 2019 after tesing positive for PEDs and serving a suspension. He was suspended again in 2021 for PEDs.

Mets will owe him $44M for 2022 and 2023 seasons.

He's on waivers for 7 days then becomes free agent. If someone picks him up within the 7 days, they will need to offer a trade to the Mets and generate a deal on who pays Cano salary. After 7 days, Mets pay the salary and he's afree agent.

It probably makes a difference that it was PEDs instead of something a little more robust like Steve Howe's problem with c*caine. PEDs are just cheating. C*caine or meth is another story.
