Jamel “Semper Fi” Herring (23-2, 11 KOs)

As a former Marine Corps, Jamel Herring is no stranger to war. Born and raised in Coram, New York, he spent years inside the boxing ring before his service in Iraq, which eventually led him into service-based combat.

Herring collected prestigious titles during his amateur career, including a silver medal at the 2010 World Military Games and two gold medals at the 2011 and 2012 Armed Forces Championships, respectively.

The most impressive factor surrounding Herring’s early career is that he accomplished what most can’t whilst remaining active in military duty. Before turning pro, he became the first active-duty marine to qualify for the US Boxing team since 1992.

Herring made a tough decision to abandon the military. Still, after defeating Masayuki Ito to capture the WBO junior lightweight title, it became evident he’d made the correct decision to pursue a full-time career in boxing.

Shakur Stevenson (16-0, 8 KOs)

24-year-old Shakur Stevenson has risen through the rankings at an expeditious rate. However, many critics expected his ascent from displaying such a well-versed and knowledgeable skillset at a young age.

Stevenson took home a silver medal in the 2016 Summer Olympics bantamweight division two years after successfully winning the Summer Youth Olympics and AIBA Youth World Championships.

Since making his professional debut in 2017, the youngster hasn’t looked back, and to add, nobody has achieved putting him on his back. An unblemished 16-0 record doesn’t come easy; after claiming the WBO featherweight championship at 12-0, he continued a domineering streak until moving up a weight class.

Following his WBO interim junior lightweight success, he’s now become the mandatory challenger to Jamel Herring, creating one of the most anticipated 130lb championship bouts in some time.

How Can Herring Win?

Most analysts will highlight the eleven-year age gap, but time and time again its Jamel Herring proves the doubter’s wrong when the odds are stacked against him.

To overcome his youthful foe, Herring will undoubtedly utilize a pressure-based attack to wear his opponent down. With a significant size and reach advantage, this is a viable tactic and an entirely possible blueprint to follow.

Finding the positions where Stevenson is uncomfortable will be crucial, nobody has managed to figure him out, but a lengthy experience advantage should favor the older man.

How Can Stevenson Win?

Having already received comparisons to Floyd Mayweather, it’s not hard to see why. An unruly reaction to incoming offense leaves most boxers punching the air when attempting to land on Stevenson. Speed kills, and the interim champ has plenty of it.

His reaction speed is followed by punching speed and a keen ability to counterstrike; if Stevenson’s usual approach works, he will quickly deplete his opponent’s energy.

Betting Picks & Odds

The available odds at Bookmakers Review are staggering, and although I favor the challenger continuing his undefeated reign, at a price tag beyond -800 it’s just not viable.

Both men possess solid durability, which leads me to the best value I can find. Whoever walks out victorious, I expect them to do so via the judges’ scorecards.
