Gervonta Davis vs. Isaac Cruz

WBC ‘Regular’ Lightweight Championship Main Event Bout

Sunday, December 05, 2021 – 04:15 PM EST at Staples Center

Gervonta “Tank” Davis (25-0, 24 KOs)

The fighting pride of Baltimore, Maryland, 27-year-old Gervonta Davis could enter his 30s as one of the greatest power-punchers to ever step inside a ring.

Boasting an outstanding amateur record of 206-15, it’s hardly surprising that Davis went on to become a multiple division world champion as a professional. He’s the former IBF super featherweight champ, two-time WBA super featherweight champion, WBA super lightweight and current WBA ‘regular’ lightweight titleholder.

Davis stems from the Sandtown-Winchester area of West Baltimore, a notoriously known location for its criminal activity – making the champs come up an inspiring story. He’s often compared to Mike Tyson, not just because of his harsh surroundings as a youth, but the knockout power he possesses.

‘Tank’ has finished all but one of his professional bouts via knockout or technical knockout, making him the most feared 135lb fighter in all of boxing.

Isaac Cruz (22-1-1, 15 KOs)

Davis was originally scheduled to face Rolando Romero. Still, a brave Mexican who actually fought on the undercard of Davis vs. Santa Cruz with an impressive first-round knockout has stepped up in attempts to derail the hype train known as Gervonta “Tank” Davis.

Isaac Cruz is relatively unknown, despite being the 6th ranked best lightweight globally. The majority of Cruz’s professional career was spent fighting against his fellow countryman on the regional circuit. He didn’t make his debut in America until 2019 but has notably won all five of his stateside bouts to date.

Similar to Davis, Cruz has the power to cause severe damage. A slugging style and solid durability with perfect timing could now lift Cruz into the spotlight with a victory over “Tank”.

How can Cruz defeat Davis?

George Kambosos Jr. shocked the world last weekend when dethroning the undisputed lightweight champion Teofimo Lopez, but can Pitbull Cruz replicate the same success?

I struggle to find a path to victory for Cruz; he will be the more petite man with a significantly lower level of skills. Outside of a surprising flash KO, the chips are really stacked against the challenger.

How can Davis defeat Cruz?

Where do I begin? Not only does Davis possess the most devastating knockout power at 135lbs, but his all-around boxing techniques have also flourished under the tutelage of Floyd “Money” Mayweather.

Orthodox fighters often crumble to Davis’ assaults from the complicated southpaw stance. A patient approach behind his jab offers a tremendous defensive tactic for the champ, which inevitably leads to his fight-ending hooks.

Davis’ power hook (left) and left jabs to the body are vicious, and in the rare occasion where he’ll own the size advantage, I can’t envision the challenger surviving the brutal blows that will come his way.

Cruz will be deceived by the shot selection of Davis, as he never repeats the same strike consecutively. The Davis versus Pedraza is an excellent example of the champion alternatives between his offensive decisions.

In addition to the skills mentioned above, Davis counter striking is second-to-none. Lightning-fast reactions, Mayweather’esk shoulder rolls, and a tendency to back peddle aim to draw his opponent's jab, which will be countered with blistering returns.

Gervonta Davis vs. Isaac Cruz Betting Picks and Odds

The available odds at Bookmakers Review overwhelmingly support Davis; this approach is almost guaranteed money with a price tag of -1200.

To find the betting value, we must predict Cruz’s toughness. Can he outlast into the championship rounds? Or will Davis finish the Mexican’s night early? I’ll side with the latter.

For all of Cruz’s toughness and grit, a 17th consecutive knockout victory for Davis is how this contest will end. The champ’s keenness to set traps, work the head and body alongside a godlike amount of power will see him close the show in under seven rounds for our boxing pick.
