David Benavidez vs. David Lemieux

WBC Interim Super-Middleweight Main Event Bout

Saturday, May 21, 2022 – 11:00 PM EDT at Gila River Arena

David Benavidez (25-0-0, 22 KOs)

He hasn't claimed the fight he desired entering his debut bout of the 2022 boxing schedule.

Still, the former two-time WBC 168-pound champion, David Benavidez, will return to his native lands of Arizona and challenge for the WBC interim super-middleweight title with a future big fight in mind.

In 2021, Benavidez sailed through Ronald Ellis and Kyrone Davis via TKO, extending his professional record to 25 undefeated fights with an impressive 22 KO/TKO stoppages.

Benavidez went on record to state he wanted Canelo Alvarez, Caleb Plant, or Jermall Charlo for his return to the ring in 2022.

However, those opponents failed to surface, and now Benavidez will make his initial 2022 outing versus the most dangerous opponent of his career in David Lemieux.

David Lemieux (43-0-4, 36 KOs)

33-year-old Canadian veteran David Lemieux knows what it takes to become a champion; as the former middleweight champion, he's since gone 9-1 following his IBF middleweight title loss to Gennady Golovkin in 2015.

We haven't seen Lemieux in the ring since June 2021, but a second-round knockout over David Zegarra was the evidence required that Lemieux still belongs in the title picture.

A clash between two of the heaviest hitting middleweights will take place on Saturday evening, but can the experience of Lemieux prevail against the youthful attributes of Benavidez?

Fight Analysis and Breakdown

How Can Benavidez Defeat Lemieux?

With youth, cardio, KO power, a home crowd, and an undefeated record on his side, Benavidez shouldn't be short of confidence entering Saturday's main event.

The physical attributes all point toward Benavidez taking this fight; owning the height, reach, and age advantage has assisted the sportsbooks in positioning him as a -1600 favorite.

However, Benavidez will want to maintain his composure; his overconfidence could be detrimental to his game plan.

How Can Lemieux Defeat Benavidez?

Lemieux's experience and gate-keeper qualities could easily present Benavidez with some issues should this fight enter the later rounds.

If he can land his flush left hook, Benavidez will be starring up at the lights, and this is why I believe the bookmakers are dramatically underestimating the Canadian.

Setting up traps for the lesser experienced Benavidez will be critical for Lemieux. If he can bait the younger fighter into a brawl, he has a good chance of finishing this fight with his brutal KO power.

Betting Picks and Odds

The available boxing odds at Bookmakers Review heavily favor Benavidez.

While I believe Lemieux could be the most difficult challenge of the Arizona natives' career, I also expect him to enter this fight with intelligent intentions.

Should Benavidez keep his calm, his durability and cardio can outwork Lemieux to the later rounds, where I'd envision a late stoppage.

With that said, betting on the Benavidez moneyline just isn't viable.

We can, however, find great value on the over 4.5 rounds. Because both men possess fight-ending power, the bookmakers present a reasonable price.
