Getting a quarter of the way into a schedule before division rivals meet is a little out of the ordinary, but that’s how things have worked out for the Oakland Athletics and Seattle Mariners who clash for the first time on Monday’s baseball betting card, and it’s not due to the 2022 season starting a week late.
Last place in the AL West is on the line Monday when Oakland and Seattle meet, and we have a free MLB pick for the first matchup of the season between the Athletics and Mariners.
Monday, May 23, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at T-Mobile Park
A couple of lefthanders are listed as the probable pitchers for one of the final games on Monday night’s card, with Seattle sending rookie Zach Logue (2-2, 2.04) out to make his fourth career major league start.
Seattle Turns to veteran Marco Gonzales (2-4, 3.08) who is making his fourth start just this season at T-Mobile Park.
Seattle is looking for its 13th-straight win in the rivalry, and BMR’s top-rated sportsbooks and betting sites have them priced around -160 with a 7-run total that favors the ‘over.’
Not much was expected of Oakland this season following a winter that saw the Athletics trade several players deemed too expensive, or simply walk via free agency.
That list included the bats belonging to Matt Chapman and Matt Olson, plus Sean Manaea and Chris Bassitt who were big pieces in the rotation.
Oakland is in the middle of a 23-game stretch playing up and down the West Coast, a span that has not been a boon so far for the Athletics after the team lost its seventh in the last 10 with a 4-1 setback Sunday in Anaheim as a +190 underdog with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review)
Seattle returns home following a depressing weekend in Boston where the Mariners were swept in a four-game series, dropping Sunday’s series finale to the Red Sox in extra innings as small underdogs on the MLB odds to mark their sixth loss in the last seven games and leave them a woeful 5-19 over the course of their last two dozen contests.
Logue got a win in his MLB debut back on April 19, a contest that saw him called in from the bullpen, and he could easily be 4-0 with a little bit of support and a break here or there.
The former Kentucky star didn’t have any support last Monday against the Twins in Oakland, and Logue also didn’t have command of the strike zone with 82 pitches in his 4.2 IP to take a tough loss in a 3-1 final as a small home favorite.
Bettors following Gonzales last Wednesday in Toronto enjoyed a nice payday as a hefty +210 underdog, the Colorado native tossing six innings of 1-run baseball in a 5-1 Seattle victory that left him with a solid 2.63 ERA across four May outings.
Seattle was 3-1 against Oakland a year ago when Gonzales started, the 30-year-old holding his ERA down to a respectable 3.32 despite allowing 6 HR in nearly 22 innings.
There isn’t any rain in the Seattle forecast for Monday, but T-Mobile Park is likely to be buttoned up as the weatherman calls for cool and cloudy temps with the thermometer in the upper-50s and a light northerly breeze (in from left).
It’s always a conundrum when two teams playing so poorly get together, neither inspiring any confidence for a moneyline play.
That’s true even when one side has dominated the rivalry in the past like the Mariners and their long win streak over the Athletics.
Let’s go with the ‘under’ in the series opener between Oakland and Seattle on Monday, with plays on the full game and first five.
