The Yankees will begin a three-game set in Seattle after splitting a doubleheader with the Mets on Sunday while the Mariners were busy taking two of three from the Rangers over the weekend. Let’s analyze this Tuesday night showdown and keep cashing our MLB picks!

After dropping seven of their last eight and in danger of getting swept by their crosstown rivals, the Yankees finally mustered the will to secure a 4-2 victory over the Mets on the back leg of a day/night doubleheader. Gio Urshela did most of the damage with a three-run blast that put the Bombers up in the third inning before Brett Gardner scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to seal the deal.
"With what we’re going through right now and some of the gut-punches we’ve had of late, for guys to really step up in the nightcap tonight and at least salvage something today is hopefully something we can build upon," Boone said.
It was a sorely needed win by the Yankees after they were beat up in the afternoon game, 10-5, and found themselves treading .500 during a season in which many believed they would run away with the division. Such has not been the case as New York’s once ferocious lineup has been reduced to a shadow of its former self, currently ranked 25th in runs scored, averaging 4.10 runs per game, with a run differential of -11 as the Midsummer Classic looms.
And now there is serious concern about whether All-Star closer, Aroldis Chapman, will maintain his role or cede it to another member of the bullpen after a meltdown in the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader. The 33-year-old lefty has had his share of troubles recently and failed to hold a one-run lead in the final frame of Sunday’s game. Chapman gave up three runs, courtesy of a series of pitching miscues, and never made it out of the inning nor did he get an out in what resulted in a 10-5 loss.
The American League West has universally been considered a two-horse race and Seattle is not one of those horses. However, they are making things interesting and have moved to within 3 ½ games of Oakland yet still remain a distant third from the division-leading Astros. But a wild card spot could be in the offing if they continue to win, which is what they did in their most recent performance when they defeated the Rangers, 4-1, on Sunday.
The victory came after taking the series opener on Friday night, 5-4 in extra innings, followed by a 7-3 loss on Saturday that led to the rubber match on Sunday. Luis Torrens provided the 4th of July fireworks with a three-run cherry bomb that drove in Mitch Haniger and Ty France. That was a lead the M’s would never relinquish as Shed Long Jr. would blast a solo shot of his own to seal the 4-1 victory, which was the team’s fourth win over the last five contests.
Both clubs had the day off on Monday but the Yankees had to fly to the West Coast which is never easy. New York will send Jameson Taillon (3-4, 5.43 ERA, 1.36 WHIP) to the bump where he will be opposed by Seattle’s Justus Sheffield (5-7, 5.88 ERA, 1.71 WHIP). The MLB odds at all of the best online sportsbooks are favoring the Yankees between -141 to -155 which is a sizeable difference in this day and age. Neither pitcher is going to mow down the other’s lineup so we may very well see plenty of action from their respective bullpens.
However, the Mariners are 9-3 over their last dozen home games and the Yankees pitching staff is a bit of a mess after Chapman flamed out in his last outing and New York’s ace, Gerrit Cole, was torched for six runs over three-plus innings in their 10-5 loss on Sunday. I think the books are giving us value on the home team and we would be downright impolite to refuse their generosity.
