The Wimbledon Championships begin on Monday, June 30, and will continue until Sunday, July 13. Over that fortnight, the world’s best tennis players will meet at the All England Club in order to vie for the most prestigious crown in tennis. Men’s Side
The two best players in the world are currently Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner.
In their most recent meeting, Carlos Alcaraz was able to get the victory in a thrilling five-set match in the final of the French Open at the Roland Garros championships. Now, Alcaraz will attempt to overtake the current number 1 player in the world, but it won’t happen at this tournament.
Jannik Sinner currently has 10,430 points and Carlos Alcaraz has 9,300. However, since Alcaraz won the tournament last season, he cannot increase his total points. Sinner is only defending 400 points from making the quarterfinals last season. So, even if Alcaraz wins the tournament, Sinner can increase his lead over Alcaraz by advancing to the semifinals or better. However, another big win over Jannik Sinner on this huge stage will change the perception of the tennis fans on who the true number 1 is, as well as give Alcaraz more confidence heading into the North American swing.
Tune Out the Noise
Tennis legend Jimmy Connors mentioned in a recent interview that it will be very important for Jannik Sinner to put all the bad talk about his loss to Alcaraz at the French Open out of his head. Connors even advised that maybe Sinner should take a break from the media in order to make sure he comes into the tournament with the proper mindset.
This season, Jannik Sinner is 19-3 and has won one title. If Jannik Sinner can make it 2 titles after this championship, it would change the way that the tennis fans currently think of this rivalry. So far this season, in Grand Slams, Sinner won the Australian Open and made the final of the French Open.
Sinner has stepped up on the big stages. Wimbledon is where he has had the least success, as his best showing is still a semifinal in 2023.
Forget the long shots on the men’s side; it’s coming down to one of these two men. As much as it would benefit the tennis world if Sinner were to win, as they would be perceived as equal rivals, I believe that, once again, Carlos Alcaraz will be the victor. They should set up for a very interesting US Open, as it is a great surface for Sinner and he is the defending champion there.

Women’s Side
The women’s side of the draw is usually known for being more wide open and for the upsets. This is the case once again, as the top players in the world come in vulnerable to this tournament.
- Top-seed Aryna Sabalenka had a disappointing loss to Coco Gauff at the French Open Finals and has been playing a lot of tennis this season. Although her game is suited for this surface, I would not be surprised to see fatigue set in. At only +250, I don’t think there is value in Sabalenka.
- Elena Rybakina has the perfect game for this surface. However, she is not in good form right now. Once again, the price (+500) is too short for me to consider a wager on Elena Rybakina
- French Open Champion Coco Gauff (+600) has two weaknesses that will be exploited here at Wimbledon, including an inconsistent forehand and a weak second serve. Both of these will become major problems for her, and although she was able to overcome them at the French Open, I don’t believe she’ll be able to do so here.
- Iga Swiatek (+650) has always struggled on grass. Although her game should translate well to the surface, she looks clearly uncomfortable with the quick bounces and the lack of setup time for her ground strokes.
- Mirra Andreeva (+750) does have a pretty good shot, but still, with her lack of big-match experience, I think it will still be one more year before she breaks through and wins a Grand Slam title.
With the world’s five top players being priced out of our consideration, it is time to look at some long shots.
- Madison Keys broke through at the Australian Open this season and her game is perfect for this surface. Her hard-hitting can blast anyone off the court, and her serve will be unreturnable on the quick grass. With the monkey off her back by getting her first Grand Slam win, Keys could break through once again, and it’s worth a look at +1000.
- Jessica Pegula is another hard-hitting American whose style will play well on this surface. She is a power player who sometimes struggles against the top players because of her lack of athleticism. The grass, however, should mitigate this and allow Pegula to hit winners and avoid extended rallies. At +2500, Pegula is definitely worth a look.
Other players that I considered but could not get all the way with were Ons Jabeur at 20 to 1 and Qinwen Zheng at 30 to 1.
The only reason I did not add Ons Jabeur is because she has not played at her top form this season, but she could definitely get hot, find her old magic, and make a run. Qinwen Zheng is another one who has struggled with inconsistent results this year, but has the talent to win this tournament. In the end, I passed on these players, but I can understand if you wanted to take a shot at either of these two talented women at a great price.
On the women’s side, we’re going to swing for the fences with a long shot. Our two best bets for the women’s side of Wimbledon are Madison Keys and Jessica Pegula.
