What Will Be Washington’s Next Nickname? (Archive)

Originally published on July 17, 2021

Team President, Jason Wright, told the Washington Post there would be a new name and logo for Washington in early 2022.

The Washington Post’s, Nicki Jhabvala, published a memo on the team’s official website and confirmed that the nickname “Warriors” would not be the name for Washington in 2022. Many fans had liked the name “Warriors” and had wanted that to be the next choice. But top sportsbooks can confirm, that ain’t it. Here are the names we’ve heard rolling around Twitter and other social media platforms that could be the next nickname for Washington.

Red Wolves/Redwolves

It should be noted that Arkansas State currently has the nickname, “Red Wolves” in college sports, but it hasn’t been used professionally. It’s an interesting nickname that would set Washington apart. If you go on Twitter, not everyone is in love with the nickname but Washington would really be able to make some cool logos out of it.

Redtails/Red Tails

Head coach, Ron Rivera, has mentioned before that he would like a strong military tie-in to the new name. The Red Tails comes to mind. The history of Red Tails is that it came from the Tuskegee Airmen, the nation’s first Black aviators in the U.S. Army Air Corps, per Washington Football Wire with USA Today. The tails of their planes were painted red for identification purposes, which led to the name Red Tails. So in general, the Red Tails would have the most military value if Washington decides to go that route.

Hogs/Red Hogs

The Hogs were the nickname given to Washington’s outstanding offensive line from the early 1980s until its final Super Bowl. There’s no need for “Red” Hogs but some believe the Red should be included in any Washington mascot scheme. Do you see it for your future NFL odds?

Senators

There’s no need to get political here. The Senators would add another political tie that is unnecessary. I’d like them to pick a mascot that hasn’t been used before. The Senators are already a professional hockey team and while it wouldn’t get confusing, I just don’t see this happening.

Commanders/Generals

We already know that Jason Wright wants a nickname that is unique to Washington. I take that as he wants a nickname that no other professional team has. Adding one of these nicknames celebrates the military, which is important to Rivera and their owner Daniel Snyder.

Washington ticket holders were polled on the following:

At this point, we know one of those listed above will be the mascot for Washington. Whichever way they go, it’ll be a good decision. The “Football Team” just doesn’t work for football. Plenty of soccer teams have “Football Club” and “FC” for short but Football Team doesn’t have that same ring to it. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens but for now, this season, they’ll still be the Football Team and you will see it in our NFL picks.

And that very same “Football Team” found a way into the playoffs. If the Football Team does that again this year, will there be talks about holding off a mascot and sticking with the Football Team? I obviously doubt it. The team has to market and build their brand again and while making the playoffs helps, the mascot and logo will help plenty more. It’s a wait and see process but I’m excited to see what Washington comes up with.
