What Line Moves Mean in Baseball (Archive)

Originally published on July 31, 2021

You should understand why the lines will move in baseball in order to become a more informed bettor. Here is the breakdown.Top Sportsbooks release their MLB odds every day. You can bet on the money-line, the run-line, or the over/under. You may notice, though, that the numbers change. For example, the Phillies may initially be favored at -110 to beat Atlanta.

But, by the end of the day, the Phillies may become the underdog while Atlanta becomes the favorite. Remember that, for baseball, the run-line does not change: the full-game run-line will always be at 1.5 and the half-game run-line will always be at .5. However, one may have to risk more or less on the run-line for a given team depending on the line movement. Here is an explanation of why these changes happen. By understanding the potential reasons for line movement, you can possibly locate betting value and become a more informed bettor.

Reason #1: Injuries

One reason why lines may move is as a response to injuries. An important player being ruled out may cause that player’s team to become less favored or more heavily dogged. Line movement is almost certain if a starting pitcher has been ruled out. The starting pitcher is arguably the most important player because he is likely going to do the most to affect every at-bat in every half-inning that he is in the game.

As a result of injury situations, there are a lot of potential avenues through which you can discover betting value. To give a completely hypothetical example, let’s say that Yankee Aaron Judge is listed as ‘questionable’ and you think that he won’t play and you think that the Yankees will still win. In this scenario, you would want to wait to bet on the Yankees.

You’ll want to wait out of anticipation of a line movement.By waiting until Judge is ruled out, you will end up getting the Yankees at a better price because the line will likely move in the opponent’s favor. In a similar vein, if you want to bet on New York’s opponent, you should bet on the opponent before Judge gets ruled out because you won’t get as good of a number on New York’s opponent after Judge gets ruled out.

Keep in mind for your MLB picks that, if you see that line movement has occurred in any game — even in a game that at least initially did not interest you — the first thing you should check is the injury report.

Reason #2: Money or Sharps

The adage “money talks” is applicable to line movement in baseball. However, the significance of this applied adage is commonly misunderstood among bettors. When the line moves in favor of a team, let’s say the Braves, then that typically means that money is coming in favor of the Braves. The misunderstanding among bettors is this: people commonly believe that it is a good thing when the line moves in their team’s favor.

But the team that is backed by the most amount of money often loses. It can be easy to foresee when a team will be popular. That team may be hyped up by major media organs, for example, and such teams will often lose. Line movement, it is true, may be driven by “sharp” action, by the clients whose opinions sportsbooks value more strongly and who may be professional gamblers.

However, note with your best bets in mind that it is not always clear whether sharps or other big bettors are driving the line movement. There are some signs that may indicate that sharps are coming down on a side (or total, as the case may be). If, all of a sudden, the lines move uniformly at the different sportsbooks very strongly in one direction, then this is called “steam” and is typically a sign of sharp action.

Yet oddsmakers can also manipulate the lines to create the appearance of sharp action. So there is no way to tell for sure. Because it’s hard to identify sharp action — not to mention the fact that sharps lose, too — I recommend relying on good research and strong reasoning instead of relying on speculations about sharp action. Keep the above information in mind while pursuing your goals in sports betting.
