Coco Gauff had lost all of her 7 matches against Iga Swiatek before she finally defeated the Polish number one player in the world. Gauff squeaked out the first at 7-6, fell in the second set 6-3, but then had a strong third set where she prevailed 6-4 to get her first win over her rival at the top.
That win was important for Gauff’s confidence going into the Grand Slam tournament played in her home country.

Keen tennis observers had often noted that as soon as Coco cleaned up her inconsistent forehand she would be in the running for number one player in the world. Gauff has one of the top backhands in the game and has improved her serve to be a top 10 server in the game.

Still the Best
After facing off against Carlos Alcaraz in the finals of the French Open, Wimbledon, and the Cincinnati Masters 1000, it is clear that eventually the torch will be passed from Novak Djokovic to Carlos Alcaraz. The question is when?
After Alcaraz’s fantastic win at Wimbledon, people thought that maybe Djokovic’s time as the number one player was done. Yet Djokovic came through in one of the most exciting matches of the year. After falling down a set and a break, Djokovic mustered all the energy and veteran guile that he could summon in order to overcome the up-and-coming Spaniard.
Djokovic will also have the advantage of it being a 5-set match and he is one of the best-conditioned players in the world.
The One Threat
One can argue that Daniil Medvedev has a chance to defeat Djokovic, but in my eyes, only Alcaraz can defeat the Serbian number one player in the world. Although Alcaraz played brilliantly in the final, he suffered many hiccups on his way to the final in Cincinnati.
In the US Open, he could be vulnerable, and if Djokovic is able to avoid him he will surely win the title. Alcaraz is Djokovic’s only threat here, making Djokovic the sharpest bet on the men’s side given the latest ATP odds.

Elena Rybakina
Improving Results
After winning Wimbledon last season, Elena Rybakina made a statement when she won the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. She also won a WTA 1000 level title when she raised the trophy in Rome. The Indian Wells win is highly predictive of success at the US Open because of the similar slow hard court conditions.

I believe that Elena Rybakina is fully healthy and her retirement was a result of her frustration with the WTA scheduling. At the previous tournament in Montreal, Rybakina had been forced to play until 3:00 a.m. and blasted the WTA for unreasonable scheduling negatively affecting her health and recovery.
Because of this, I was not surprised to see Elena Rybakina withdraw from Cincinnati to get ready for this tournament, which could potentially define her season in a much more positive light.
