UFC Vegas 47: Jack Hermansson vs. Sean Strickland Lock on the Card (Archive)

Originally published on February 2, 2022

Another week, another spin of the UFC wheel as we bring you a card that hopefully doesn’t suck! For the UFC’s return to the Apex, we’re tasked with coming up with a lock for you, our dear readers, to ensure you make many monies for a solid gold pinwheel hat, but when you look at this card… It’s messy.

While Le Martin and Dave Manyun can break down this card more adeptly than I, in regards to the ins/outs/ and game tape of this card, we’re looking at one of those air dates that need a card and not a card that needs an air date situations that have become prevalent the last few years since the start of the ESPN+ era.

As an MMA fan, you can enjoy the hell out of this card but as a bettor… Hooo boy! Without further ado, let’s take a look into the UFC odds and how you should be wagering over.

Jack Hermansson vs. Sean Strickland

UFC Middleweight Main Event Bout

Saturday, February 5, 2022 – 07:00 PM EST at UFC Apex Center

Sean Strickland is running a five-fight winning streak with the two most recent wins (Uriah Hall and Krzysztof Jotko) by decision and for Jack Hermansson he’s gone 1-1 in his last two, with both of them going to the scorecards.

While Strickland has won more fights than Hermansson has in the last few years, the quality of opponents between the two has been weighed more on the Hermansson side than it has been on the Strickland side, with Hermansson taking on Jared Cannonier, Jacare, and Kelvin Gastelum in a three-fight stand.

Conversely, Strickland’s last big opponent name opponent was Kamaru Usman in 2017, with a spate of Court McGee and Brendan Allen on the menu ever since. (Not shading them by the way, just trying to give a more equitable comparison).

Both of these guys are knockout artists, with Hermansson having 50% of his wins come from dropping or stopping other human beings, while ten of Strickland’s 24 wins have come by way of stopping and dropping other humans.

Both men are fairly split when the fight goes to the ground as Strickland is 4-0 by way of submission and Hermansson is 6-2. When it comes to the scorecards, Strickland dominates, as he is 10-2 by way of the decision in his pro career, with his last loss by decision coming in that aforementioned 2017 loss to Usman.

For Hermansson, he’s 5-2 when it comes to the judges, which is respectable, but when you have someone who lives and dies on the 15-25 minute grind, it makes it less advantageous for you to score points, especially when your last five-minute main event fight saw you lose on points (Marvin Vettori in December 2020).

For your UFC picks, note that If you’re looking for a lock for this card, take the 'over' 4 ½ rounds (-105 ) and Strickland on points (-210) as this is the most likely method of victory on this card.
