The New York Mets exploded for 13 runs against the Nationals in last night’s game. Will that same offense be showcased tonight, or will both offenses cool off after a 13-5 game yesterday?
Let’s see what the MLB odds tell us at the top sportsbooks! Here are our picks and predictions for the game between the Washington Nationals and New York Mets.
Tuesday, May 31, 2022 – 07:10 PM EDT at Citi Field
The Mets are going to ride it out with Trevor Williams tonight. Williams has a 4.37 ERA with an 0-3 record. However, he’s been much better recently and deserves the start tonight.
In the last 30 days, Williams has had a 4.02 xFIP with 28.8% of strikeouts. He also has allowed just 5.5% of walks.
He’s allowing some power to righties with an ISO of .233 in the last 30 days, but for the most part, Williams has been very solid in relief, mopping up bad pitching.
On the other hand, Patrick Corbin will get the start for the Nationals. He’s had an awful 2022 campaign with a 1-7 record to start the year along with a 6.30 ERA.
Corbin has a 4.74 xFIP with 14.2% of strikeouts. He hasn’t been nearly as bad as his ERA in the last 30 days but has allowed a .345 wOBA to righties with an ISO of .223 to righties.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets end up struggling against Corbin. Corbin has two starts against the Mets this season and has allowed just 2 runs in 9 innings pitched against the Mets. However, in both those two games, the Mets rallied and ended up winning both of those games, 5-1 and 4-2.
Corbin got his first win of the season against Colorado in his last start, but he still allowed 3 runs on 7 hits in 6.1 innings. It wasn’t like he was very good. That was an average start at best, so it’s hard to break down the Mets’ chances against Corbin.
Corbin’s been bad but he’s been better analytically and has shut down the Mets when called on.
Meanwhile, the Mets finally elected to give Trevor Williams another shot to start.
Williams came in to mop up a brutal game in San Francisco. But when he came in, he allowed just one hit in 3.2 innings of work along with 5 strikeouts.
He stopped the bleeding and will now get an opportunity to start again.
Therefore, I’m going to look at the Under for this game. Both offenses are below average in the last 30 days against the opposition.
Trevor Williams looked much better against San Francisco in his last appearance while Corbin has had success against the Mets in both of his two starts this year. Corbin’s box score stats will only get better as he continues to pitch. He’s been a bit unlucky and hasn’t been great but has been better than his stats would suggest.
I’m taking the Under in this game for my MLB picks of the day. These two teams need 10 runs to beat us.
