Premier League hopefuls West Brom Albion welcomes a stubborn Brighton squad to the Hawthorns on Saturday, where a clash of positive contrasting forms will play out in the FA Cup third round.
The Baggies are undefeated in their previous ten home meetings, while the visitors have lost two of their last twelve away fixtures in all competitions. Both teams have shown resiliency this term, but a clear difference between the two is the level of competition they’ve been matched against.
West Brom’s journey to reinstating their Premier League status will be difficult. Still, a current 4th placed position in the Championship standings sees them four points adrift of an automatic qualification spot. Their domestic success thus far is thanks to a robust back four, as they’re the joint-best defensive team in the league, alongside Fulham.
Despite a solid home form of late, West Brom’s FA Cup history hasn’t fared well, particularly when facing Premier League opposition. They’ve lost four of their last five meetings on home turf versus EPL squads, and Brighton will hope to capitalize on this downtrend.
Brighton held European Champions Chelsea to a drawn and then travelled to Goodison Park and collected three points from Everton. With their heads high, Graham Potter’s men are sitting in the ninth position of the EPL table and are notably performing to a higher level than last season’s attempt.
History also favours the Seagulls, who’ve been eliminated from the FA Cup third round on just two occasions within the last twelve years.
West Brom was relegated from the Premier League last term, but they can find solace in knowing they defeated Brighton 1-0 the last time these two met at the Hawthorns.
With that said, you can’t deny Potter’s more tremendous success in 2021/22, and although significant squad changes are expected, Brighton’s trip to the West Midlands will be the toughest test WBA have faced all year.
Finding positive betting value for EPL teams during the early stages of cup competitions is rare, but I’ve noticed that Brighton are the exception this weekend. I’ll take the plus-money odds on a top-flight squad who’re matched with a lesser talented squad any day.

Swansea City hasn’t kicked a ball since 11th December, as coronavirus suspensions have kept the Welsh outfit side-lined, and despite entering their weekend FA Cup clash with fresh legs, it’s hard to gauge how they’ll fare after such a lengthy break.
Last time out, Swansea was hammered 4-1 by Nottingham Forest at the Swansea.com stadium; this result became their third consecutive loss and has left them bottom-feeding in the lower half of the English Championship table.
With a relegation battle looming, Swansea’s focus is likely centred around their future domestic outings, and a conflict with Premier League side Southampton could certainly damper their return to action.
Southampton hasn’t provided much positivity themselves, but a recent improvement was shown when defeating West Ham 3-2. Ralph Hasenhuttl will happily welcome an extension of his squad’s positive turnaround against a lacklustre Swansea team.
Southampton reached the semi-final of last season’s FA Cup without conceding a single goal until the eventual cup winners Leicester City dispatched them in a close 1-0 encounter.
Losing 40% of their domestic fixtures thus far, it’s difficult to envision Swansea correcting their defensive woes against an EPL side. In addition, plus money betting value can be found on Southampton, making it a tempting wager to back on Saturday.
Score Prediction: Swansea 0 – Southampton 2
