Euro 2020 Group B Matchday 2
Thursday, June 17, 2021 – 12:00 PM EDT at Parken Stadium
During Denmark’s last outing, the devastating occurrence that took place will surely shake up their locker room; a near-death experience involving Christian Eriksen could make or break the Danish outfit.
The Danes opening Nordic clash with Finland eventually ended in a 1-0 defeat, far from the highlight start you want to a Euro campaign. Nevertheless, a surprising result, as Denmark were the stronger side with 70% and 22 shots, but following the Eriksen incident, they could not deliver anything notable. Whereas Finland capitalized on their only shot of the game on target, taking all three points.
The clash in Copenhagen left players and fans worldwide in distress. Looking for composure just a few days later against the groups strongest team in Belgium will be difficult for Kasper Hjulmand’s squad.
Belgium will not hold back despite the tragedy that took place, and their recent history playing in Copenhagen has delivered nothing but success. Overlooking Belgium in any of their group stage fixtures is near-impossible; with such rich talent on the pitch and a high-scoring presence, we’ll be surprised if they don’t go undefeated in Group B.
Belgium’s opening fixture versus Russia was a routine dominant performance. They enjoyed 67% of the ball and held Russia to a single shot on target – while scoring three goals of their own. No shock here; Romelu Lukaku found himself on the scoreboard yet again, making it 22 consecutive games where his talents have assisted Belgium’s goal tally.
We can’t solely focus on Lukaku because this Belgium squad has been unstoppable in the grand scheme of things. Losing just one game in their previous 24 fixtures, Roberto Martinez’s team have extended their undefeated streak to ten games and should have all the confidence for number eleven this Thursday afternoon.
Needless to say, Denmark will lose a crucial player in Eriksen whilst Belgium could welcome the return of danger man Kevin De Bruyne. Therefore, a strengthened Belgium versus a weakened Denmark doesn’t pose the greatest chance for the Danes.
You would expect Denmark to have Lukaku double-marked, but these tactics can only open areas for other Belgium players to make their mark. With that said, Denmark does represent a strong team than their 1-0 loss to Finland represents, and it won’t be a walk in the park for Martinez’s men.
However, I do anticipate Belgium to repeat their Nations Cup successes against Denmark. Denmark conceded six goals during their previous two clashes with Belgium.
Sixty-two goals for Lukaku and the ownership of this years Serie A title makes him one of the world’s greatest current strikers. So don’t be surprised to see him on the scoresheet again in a Group B encounter that should see this Belgium side leave with another three points.
