His historic career will have one final swan song this season. Regardless of how Duke plays, this will be Coach K’s final year with the Blue Devils. The majority of Coach K’s legacy is set in stone. Duke has been a top team in college basketball thanks to Krzyzewski. After five titles, a sixth would just be field dressing.
Still, the Blue Devils want to end Coach K’s career with success. After failing to reach the NCAA Tournament last year, Duke needs to drastically improve. Duke is currently listed at +1400 odds to win the national championship in 2022, but that might be too lofty of a goal. After all, they failed to reach the NCAA Tournament at all last season.
Still, Duke has a solid recruiting class and an excellent coach. Can the Blue Devils win a national title in Coach K’s final year?
Thankfully for Duke, college basketball has a quick turnover. Teams can go from zero to hero in just one season thanks to how many freshmen contribute early in college basketball. For Duke, this plays well for their title hopes.
To put it bluntly, Duke did not have the talent to compete last year. Regardless of how the veterans progress, there is no hope for them to carry this team to a title without new recruits. The Blue Devils have one of the best recruiting classes from 2021, and all players will have to contribute early. This could be similar to how the 2015 team relied on Justise Winslow, Jahlil Okafor and Tyus Jones.
Of all recruits, Paolo Banchero will easily be the best player for Duke. If he lives up to the hype, Duke has the NCAA Tournament as its floor. With the talent behind him, they could theoretically compete for a title in Coach K’s final season as head coach.
According to top sportsbooks, if the Blue Devils want a ring, they’ll have to rely on the freshmen. The good news is that this seems to be a winning recipe.
Obviously, Duke’s success will also boil down to who else will be competing for a national title. That’s some bad news for Duke. There are plenty of great teams that will be looking to earn a top seed in the NCAA Tournament.
Gonzaga will be the top dog in college basketball, and any team wanting to win a title will have to go through them. The Big Ten also had plenty of great teams last year, and most of them will be looking to bounce back this season. In the SEC, Kentucky will always be considered a top team. Also, there are plenty of great teams that will be better than the Blue Devils. Duke might not be the best team in their own conference. Duke has a path to winning a title, and their ceiling would get them there. However, their floor is far from it. They have what it takes, but it will be very surprising if they win a championship.
