Our Tuesday free MLB pick assignment takes us way out west to San Diego where the Padres and Milwaukee Brewers continue a legitimate potential playoff preview.
Tuesday, May 24, 2022 – 09:40 PM EDT at Petco Park
It has been more than four years since the Milwaukee Brewers last won a game in San Diego, where the Padres have proven to be rude hosts by winning the last seven matchups.
According to the numbers on our live odds board, that streak will come to an end when the clubs continue their 3-game set Tuesday night.
San Diego needed to go to extra innings to keep its streak alive in Monday’s series opener, the 3-2 triumph made possible by rookie Jose Azocar’s game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th at Petco Park.
Monday’s matchup closed right around a pick ‘em, the Brewers slightly favored at many of the best sportsbooks and betting sites.
Milwaukee is a little chalkier for Tuesday’s tilt that will get some rare midweek prime-time love from TBS, with most shops carrying the Brewers around -130 on the moneyline.
One of two contests carrying a low 6½-run scoreboard target, the probable pitchers for the second game of the series are Corbin Burnes (1-2, 2.26) for Milwaukee and San Diego southpaw Blake Snell (0-1, 7.36).
Despite pitching well and completing at least 5 innings in all eight of his starts, Burnes only has an unimpressive 1-2 record while the Brewers have split the contests.
Some of it has been due to not getting much support, along with some poor timing on Burnes’s part like last Wednesday against Atlanta, a 7-6 win in extras for Milwaukee as -130 chalk in the MLB odds.
Burnes faced the Padres twice last season and split the two decisions with a solid winning effort out in San Diego (6 IP, 0 R, 10 K) and the loss coming at home (6 IP, 4 ER). He has yet to get a win on the road this season despite holding opposing hitters to a .205 batting average and pitching to a 1.80 ERA across four starts (25 IP).
It wasn’t exactly the season debut Snell had hoped for last Wednesday in Philadelphia, but at least he got back on a major league mound for the first time since last September. Closing as a +136 underdog at BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review), Snell labored through 84 pitches and 3.2 innings while allowing 3 runs in the 3-0 Phillies win.
Snell had a very similar outing against the Brewers in Milwaukee exactly one year ago today, burning 82 pitches to last the same 3.2 innings in a 5-3 defeat.
He allowed all 5 Brewers runs in what was his only assignment against Milwaukee in 2021, with Avisail Garcia and Manny Piña each taking Snell deep.
Veteran crew chief Laz Diaz will be calling balls and strikes in this one. The Miami native will soon reach the 3,000-game plateau of his career.
His plate assignments this season have run a smooth 3-3-2 O/U/P in the totals column at online betting sites with Tuesday night marking his first game at the Petco dish since April 2019.
The Padres on the moneyline and the ‘Under’ are my plays on Tuesday.
The transaction wire is always busy in the majors, and that is true for this betting matchup with the Brewers missing closer Josh Hader who is on emergency leave while his wife deals with complications from her pregnancy. San Diego recently lost Mike Clevinger to the injured list due to a strain in his right triceps.
Incredible mound depth will help the Padres absorb the latest injury to Clevinger, and now that Snell has his first-game jitters out of the way, the former Cy Young winner should be ready to relax and do his part in helping San Diego continue its streak against the Brewers.
