Some players could be making their debuts with new teams Tuesday around the NHL following Monday’s Trade Deadline.

The Columbus Blue Jackets essentially waived the white flag on the season Monday when they traded forward Max Domi to Carolina for a prospect. In 53 games this season, Domi has nine goals and 32 assists with a plus-2 rating. The Jackets also are going to be without No. 1 netminder Elvis Merzlikins for a while with an upper-body injury. Long story short: Fade this team the rest of the way.

This could be the Pittsburgh debut of Ducks winger Rickard Rakell, who was acquired on Monday. Appearing in 51 games this season, Rakell has 28 points (16 goals, 12 assists) while averaging 18 minutes, 21 seconds of ice time, including 2:32 in power-play situations. He led the Ducks in shots (136). Rakell did miss the past few with an injury, but that simply may have been Anaheim holding him out ahead of a trade.
Should be Tristan Jarry in net for the Pens. He’s in the Vezina conversation with a 31-12-4 record, 2.28 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. Jarry has won four straight games and allowed two goals or fewer in each. Probably be Joonas Korpisalo (7-10-0, 4.10 GAA, .878 SV) for Columbus and he’s a major downgrade from Merzlikins.
The Jackets have won just five of their past 27 trips to Pittsburgh. The Pens are 2-0 in the series this year and won both in Columbus.

The Blues are a very good team so I don’t fade them all that often, but they do enter on a three-game losing streak and have dropped seven of nine overall – many of those on the road.
On Monday, the Blues acquired Nick Leddy and Luke Witkowski from the Detroit Red Wings in exchange for Jake Walman, Oskar Sundqvist, and a 2023 second-round pick. Leddy was the key part of that for St. Louis even though he was an ugly minus-33 for Detroit.
The Blues will be without three key injured offensive players Tuesday in centers Tyler Bozak (11 points) and Robert Thomas (48 points) and winger Vladimir Tarasenko (54 points). That’s a lot of missing firepower.

It probably will be Jordan Binnington’s turn in net, although he has largely lost the top job to Ville Husso. Binnington is a disappointing 13-12-4 with a 3.11 GAA and .903 SV. He has lost his past three but likely gets his turn because he hasn’t been in net since March 13. St. Louis is 1-6 on the NHL odds in its past seven vs. the Eastern Conference.
The Capitals reacquired winger Marcus Johansson from the Seattle Kraken on Monday. Johansson had six goals and 23 points in 51 games with Seattle. Caps star Alex Ovechkin, who recently passed Jaromir Jagr for third all-time in goals, has a four-game goal streak going and has piled up eight goals and 12 points over the last nine games.
Washington’s Vitek Vanecek (16-8-5, 2.36 GAA, .918 SV) had a six-game winning streak snapped Sunday but it really wasn’t his fault.

With all due respect to the Colorado Avalanche, who are favored to win the Western Conference on the NHL futures odds, the Calgary Flames in my opinion are the team to beat out West for your NHL picks, and I expect a Flames-Avs conference final. The Sharks are ahead of only expansion Seattle in the Pacific Division.
San Jose did make an interesting trade Monday in landing goaltender Kaapo Kahkonen and a 2022 fifth-round pick from Minnesota in exchange for Jacob Middleton.

Kahkonen may become the team’s primary netminder, but he won’t start yet on Tuesday. That will most likely be rookie Zach Sawchenko, who is 1-2-1 with a 3.35 GAA and a .901 save percentage in seven outings. San Jose also has some injury questions with wingers Jonathan Dahlen (22 points) and Matt Nieto (12 points). Neither is expected to play.
Calgary made its big trades before the deadline in landing Tyler Toffoli from Montreal and Calle Jarnkrok from Seattle but made another move Monday in acquiring winger Ryan Carpenter from Chicago. Carpenter has 11 points in 59 games this season with a 52.3 success rate on faceoffs.
Jacob Markstrom should be in net. The Vezina candidate is 29-11-7 with a 2.07 GAA and .928 SV. He had a four-game winning streak snapped last Friday but only allowed one goal in a loss to Buffalo. Markstrom is a stellar 18-4-6 with 1.84 GAA at home.
San Jose is 1-7 in its past eight on the road, while Calgary is 15-3 in its last 18 at home.
