Best Bets for the 2022 Australian Grand Prix (Archive)

Originally published on April 9, 2022

The Australian GP returns to the F1 calendar for the first time since 2019 following two years of postponement due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Traditional the first race on the calendar, the Australian GP has to settle for 3rd this year. There are reports that this year’s race could be a wet one, with a very high chance of rain during the race. This year’s track will also feature its new updated layout.

Check out what Formula 1 betting picks we are getting ahead of this year’s race.

Australian Grand Prix

Sunday, April 10, 2022 – 01:00 AM EDT at Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit

Previous Race

Last time out at the Saudi Arabian GP it was the current world championship holder Max Verstappen who claimed the top spot on the podium after he made his way from 4th place on the grid to winning the race and 25 championship points.

The world-standing top 3 currently looks like this:

Mercedes Problems

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have been struggling a lot this season with their aerodynamics, finishing a lucky 3rd in Bahrain and 10th in Saudi Arabia. It looks like Hamilton and Mercedes need to get their mess together quickly or this season will be a total write-off.

They will be bringing their first major update to the fore this weekend in Melbourne. Whether it will pay off in the long run, only time will tell.

Things Looking Bleak for McLaren

Australian driver and current McLaren driver, Daniel Ricciardo admittedly said he is going to struggle to finish inside the top 10 at his home Grand Prix.

Thus far this season, Ricciardo has seen a 14th place finish and a retirement. Teammate Lando Norris finished 7th and 15th. Compare that to last season when at this stage of the championship they had finished 4th and 7th in race one and 3rd and 6th in race two.

Ferrari Flying High

After a few bleak years out of the limelight, it seems the famous Italian outfit is back on top, for now at least. The last time they were competitive was back in 2019, and when we say competitive, we mean they finished 2nd in the championship, they were a massive 235 combined points behind Mercedes.

This season they have enjoyed success in the first two rounds, finishing 1st and 2nd and then 2nd and 3rd. Charles Leclerc currently leads the championship and Sainz is right behind him.

Past Winners

Outright Race Winner

If it ain’t broke don’t fix it. We are going with the better betting odds here by taking Leclerc to come out on top over Max Verstappen and win this year’s Australian GP.

Verstappen only beat Leclerc by ½ of a second in the Saudi Arabian GP, add to the fact that Red Bull has never won a race here and Verstappen has only ever finished on the podium in one of his previous six F1 races on this track.

We will happily take a loss here at these odds. Verstappen represents no value at +120. We believe Leclerc should be in around +115 and Verstappen +160.

Top 10 Finish

We have admittedly had to make a U-turn on this Haas F1 team, who have surprised a lot of people so far this season. Kevin Magnussen looks to be back and as sharp as ever upon his last-minute return to the paddock, and Mick Schumacher has been a little unlucky, finishing 11th in race one and having to withdraw in the second race due to a crash he suffered in qualifying.

At odds of +160 from the best sportsbooks, we are more than happy to get behind this duo to finish inside the top 10.

Grid Position of Winner

Our final selection this week has two combined bets, we are looking to oppose pole position here in Australia. The winner has only come from pole position in 2 of the previous 10 races and with the potential of rain and a few different race winners here this weekend, we love this play even more. Sticking ½ a unit on 3rd or 4th and 1 unit on 2nd position is our advised stakes.
