Danielle Collins had a very close match with Elise Mertens in the round of 16. Collins won the match 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Collins was impressive and resilient in the victory. Collins’ power was on display and you could definitely say the match was on her racket.
Collins faltered at the end of the first set, but then dialed in and was consistent enough to get the victory. Collins especially shined in backhand to backhand rallies, and her ability to be dominant from the backhand side was the difference in the match. Collins hit 45 winners to 41 unforced errors in the victory.
Danielle Collins’ style is uniquely suited for Australia. Collins has powerful groundstrokes so the quick surface accentuates her power. Collins is also a fighter and enjoys the hot and humid conditions. While other players might lose energy and wilt in the heat, Collins gains energy in the oppressive heat. Collins has traditionally done well here in Australia and this year has been no different. Danielle Collins' success here at the tournament was not a surprise, because she usually does well in Australia.
Alize Cornet, on the other hand, is a surprise to many observers. Alize Cornet was a massive +500 underdog by WTA odds in her match against former world number one Simona Halep. This was one of the most high-profile wins of Cornet's career, and definitely her most impressive win in the last four seasons.
Cornet is currently ranked 61 in the world, but this strong run at the Australian Open will allow her to move up the rankings.
Simona Halep is not Cornet's only high-profile win in this tournament. She also scored an impressive victory over current world #3 Garbiñe Muguruza in round two. With two victories over two impressive players, it is safe to say that Alize Cornet is playing in her top form.
Alize Cornet plays a defensive style similar to that of Elise Mertens. I believe the match against Mertens will be good preparation for Collins going into this match against a player who prefers a similar style. Collins will once again be the aggressor in the match, and I believe that is where Collins is most comfortable. Yet, as Cornet has shown, dismissing her chances as a big underdog in this tournament is not a wise endeavor.
I like the over in this match. I do believe that Cornet is playing so well that she will not cede many easy points to Collins. Danielle will have to work her way to victory. Collins is no stranger to hard-fought battles and I believe that this match will be another one.
Cornet will have the game to be able to keep this match close and win a set. My first bet for today is Alize Cornet/Danielle Collins over 20.5 games.
WTA Pick: Alize Cornet/Danielle Collins Over 20.5 Games (-120) at Bovada (visit our Bovada Review)

According to the ATP odds, Daniil Medvedev is the clear favorite to win this tournament and his play so far has reinforced that belief. Medvedev's most recent match was a four-set victory over Maxime Cressy. Medvedev dropped the third-set tiebreak but other than that it was a straightforward win. Medvedev had 15 Aces and 6 double faults in the victory.
More impressive, however, was his 60 winners to only 11 unforced errors. If Medvedev continues to limit his unforced errors like this, he will be very tough to beat in this tournament. Medvedev was not broken and held all 22 service games in the match against Cressy.
Felix Auger-Aliassime scored an impressive victory over Marin Cilic in Round 4. Cilic has been playing some of the best tennis we have seen in the last couple of years. For Auger-Aliassime to get the victory says a lot about his current state of mind. Auger-Aliassime is serving excellently, with 22 Aces to just 4 double faults in the win.
He was broken twice in the match against Cilic. He broke Cilic twice as well. Overall, it was an excellent victory against an in-form former Grand Slam champion.
Now Felix Auger-Aliassime faces his toughest test yet in the world #2, Daniil Medvedev. Although Auger-Aliassime has plenty of potential to be a future Grand Slam champion, I do not believe this will be the tournament in which he makes his breakthrough.
Medvedev's recent penchant to avoid unforced errors makes him almost unbeatable. I believe that Medvedev will win in dominating fashion. My second play for the day is Daniil Medvedev -6 games.
ATP Pick: Daniil Medvedev -6 Games (-115) at Bovada
