This week sees the first major championship of 2023 with the Masters Tournament at Augusta National from April 6th to April 9th. Last December, at BMR we took an early look at the Masters for BMR when Tony Finau and Xander Schauffele were selected.
Given this week’s forecast conditions, I am still very happy with those selections, and we are going to add a few more bets and props in this week’s preview.
Plenty of recent rain means the course could play longer than normal years, possibly like the fall of 2020 when Dustin Johnson won with a record score of 20-under par when the greens were soft, but the course played long.

Weather Forecast
The weather forecast for the four days of the event is like the recent weeks in Augusta, Georgia with rain likely. Expect the course to play long but the greens to be holding better and a lower score than normal should be reasonably expected.
Has Brooks Koepka Timed His Run Perfectly?
That appears the main question to me, can Brooks Koepka translate his fine LIV Golf form? That form has seen him win last week in Orlando after ending 2022 with a win in Jeddah.
We know the thirty-two-year-old from West Palm Beach in Florida has been the best major championship performer of recent years with a slew of victories and top finishes. The four-time major champion will be keen to go one better than 2019 when he was runner-up at Augusta National. In 2020 here, when conditions were similar, he also finished nicely in 7th.
That’s no surprise, given Koepka is at his best when courses play along with his effortless length. Combine that withholding greens this week and Koepka has his optimum conditions for making a big run at a fifth major title.
There is bound to be some negative media coverage of Koepka this week given the golf journalists' need for confrontation, but he is the sort of character who will double down on his focus and give two fingers to that sort of coverage. I like Tommy Fleetwood to make a top-20 finish for a fourth time in seven attempts at Augusta National.
Tommy Fleetwood finished 19th here in 2020 when wet conditions prevailed so that seems a solid marker to take him for this week in Georgia. A couple of weeks ago, Taylor Moore beat him into the runner-up spot at the Valspar Championship, so we know the thirty-two-year-old Englishman is in fine form and his consistency is perfect for the props markets rather than an outright win.
