2022 Wells Fargo Championship Picks: How to Bet This Week’s PGA Tour Event (Archive)

Originally published on May 7, 2022

Due to the Presidents Cup being held at the regular Wells Fargo Championship track of Quail Hollow later in the year, this year’s renewal moves to the TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm.  The course was previously known as TPC Avenel and held different PGA Tour events dating back to 1987.

The most recent events were the Quicken Loans National of 2017 and 2018 won by Francesco Molinari and Kyle Stanley respectively.

Wells Fargo Championship

Thursday, May 05 to Sunday, May 08, 2022 – 07:00 AM at TPC Potomac at Avenel Farm

Par 70, 7139 Yards

Strong and long off the tee is a huge advantage at the TPC Potomac where the shorter the better for approach shots that require as much spin control as possible to what’s often firm surfaces.  We know the professionals are in for a tough test when Justin Thomas said about TPC Avenel, “you could 100% host a US Open here”.

Stephen to Jaeger Bomb the TPC Avenel

German, Stephen Jaeger has taken my eye this week after a strong performance at the Mexico Open last week.  That was perfect timing for the thirty-two-year-old from Munich who has previous good form here at TPC Avenel when he was 13th in the Quicken Loans event of 2018.

That result was a career-best effort on the PGA Tour at the time so arriving here in good form is the perfect recipe for a strong week in Maryland.  2021 was a sensational year for Stephen Jaeger on the Korn Ferry Tour when he accumulated eight top 5 finishes to gain his playing privileges on the PGA Tour.

The promotion to the big league has been far from seamless for Jaeger and last week’s 15th was only his second top 20 finish in eighteen PGA Tour events.  With motivation at a peak for Stephen Jaeger to nail down a big performance on the PGA Tour while returning in good form to the track he had a career-best effort in 2018, is the perfect recipe to bet him as the week’s longshot bomb at +12500 with BetOnline (visit our BetOnline Review) amongst your best bets

Don’t Forget Course Form to Avoid That Sung Kang Feeling

This week’s 2022 Wells Fargo Championship has reminded me of the days, I used to bet Sung Kang also known as Kang Sung-hoon, here at TPC Potomac and on one occasion he was as big as +35000 in 2018.  I was relieved to refer to my notes for the course that said, “consider Sung Kang strongly no matter what sort of form he’s in”.

I could have had a sunken (Sungkang) feeling on Sunday night, if I hadn’t referred to my notes that charted his 3rd in 2018, his 5th in 2017, and a 6th five years previous at the course when it was used on the Korn Ferry Tour.  When we combine that information with his improved effort last week at the Mexico Open at Vidanta, we have a bet waiting.

My advice is to look around for any firms doing top 40 or top 30 betting for a saver, but the bulk of our stake will be on the top 20 market with BetOnline.  I also advise taking a small-stakes bet on Sung Kang as a longshot winner because the month of May is often one the thirty-five-year-old Korean finds his best form in, as his one PGA Tour win, the 2019 Byron Nelson win can testify.

Don’t forget to place your bets at a top-rated sportsbook.
