2022 Miami Open Picks for March 26 (Archive)

Originally published on March 26, 2022

Whether it is spring break, a music festival, or tennis action, Miami is the place to be right now. We’ve seen some of our favorites win, some big upsets, and high quality of tennis so far at this tournament. Let’s take a look at today’s tennis odds to find more winning tennis picks.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs. J.J. Wolf

Saturday, March 26, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Hard Rock Stadium

Stefanos Tsitsipas

Stefanos Tsitsipas is a charismatic 23-year-old tennis player from Greece that is ranked number 5 in the world. Tsitsipas is a polarizing personality that makes the tennis world more interesting. He is one of the first players to fully embrace the outreach of social media and his kindness, or some would say naivete, has made him a love-him-or-hate-him type character.

Tsitsipas is 15-7 on the year. He has a hold break percentage of 107.3%. After reaching 5 finals in 2021, Tsitsipas' best performance this season is to reach the final in Rotterdam. Tsitsipas has become a high-level player on tour, but he still struggles to beat the ATP's elite.

Stefanos Tsitsipas lost in the third round of his most recent event, Indian Wells, to Jenson Brooksby. After cruising through the first set, Tsitsipas' fitness caught up with him, and he looked tired while dropping the second two sets. Tsitsipas had an injury early in the season and it does not look like his conditioning is back to 100%.

J.J. Wolf

After garnering attention for his bombastic style of play at Ohio State University, J.J. Wolf turned pro. Wolf did well on the Challenger tour and now is making his way at the ATP level. His best career performance is making the third round of the US Open in 2020.

J.J. Wolf is also 23 years old and is ranked 167 in the world. Wolf has a hold/break percentage of 97.1%. He had to qualify here in Miami but won both his matches in straight sets. He is coming off a semifinal appearance in the Phoenix Challenger event after being eliminated in the second round in Indian Wells. At Indian Wells, Wolf fell in three sets to Roberto Bautista Agut, which is not a bad loss for a player of his development.

J.J. Wolf and Stefanos Tsitsipas have faced each other once. The match was in February at the Acapulco event. Tsitsipas won easily 6-1, 6-0. It was utter domination by the Greek star.

The Pick

Unfortunately for fans of Wolf's big personality and game, I expect a similar result for today. Acapulco is somewhat predictive for Miami. The courts in Acapulco play slow like Miami, although the altitude makes the ball play slightly faster. Regardless, success in Acapulco does translate well to the surface here in Miami.

Following the ATP odds, our first bet for ATP Indian Wells is J.J. Wolf/Stefanos Tsitsipas Under 22 games.

Ons Jabeur vs. Kaia Kanepi

Saturday, March 26, 2022 - 09:00 PM EDT at Hard Rock Stadium

Ons Jabeur

Ons Jabeur struggled with the heat and humidity in Miami in her first match this week. Jabeur faced Magda Linette and was able to overcome her opponent and the conditions for a 7-6, 6-2 victory. However, we must note that she did take a medical timeout for dizziness during the match. This win allowed Jabeur to break a slump after having lost her in the first round of her past two tournaments.

Jabeur is a 27-year-old player from Tunisia who is ranked number 10 in the world. She has one of the craftiest games on tour. Jabeur likes to change pace, use a variety of spin, and uses angles better than almost anyone. In the past, her fitness had been her biggest issue but over the past two seasons, she has concentrated on getting herself in the best shape possible. This has resulted in her crafty game being vaulted into the top 10.

Jabeur is 7-5 on the year with a hold break percentage of 106.4%. She was a finalist three times last season and won one title in Birmingham on grass. With the retirement of Ash Barty, Jabeur can now claim to have the most versatile game on tour.

Kaia Kanepi

Kaia Kanepi started slow but won the last eight games of her match against Sara Sorribes Tormo. The match lasted 2 hours and 46 minutes, which was an impressive physical display of endurance for the 36-year old Estonian player, who is ranked number 61 in the world.

This is the first time that Kanepi has made the third round of the Miami Open since 2015. Kanepi has a powerful game and likes to blow opponents off the court. Her court coverage is not the best, so she prefers to play quick points. Her style doesn't always play well here on the slow courts of Miami.

Kaia Kanepi is 9-4 on the year with a hold/break percentage of 111.4 %. When Kanepi is playing well, she has one of the most powerful, efficient games on tour. Consistency has been an issue for Kanepi, especially against the top-level players.

The Pick

Unfortunately for Kaia Kanepi today, Ons Jabeur is a top-level player. I expect Jabeur's ability to keep the rallies going to frustrate Kanepi. This will allow Jabeur to find openings in which she can force Kanepi to make errors.

Jabeur is adept at redirecting pace and I expect we should see a lot of her crafty point construction on display today.

Following the WTA odds, our second bet for the Miami Open is Ons Jabeur -3.5 games.
