It is time for the finals at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome. Iga Swiatek and Ons Jabeur will take the court with the title on the line.
Who will lift the trophy at the end? How should we approach this match to make a winning tennis pick?
Sunday, May 15, 2022 – 07:00 AM EDT at Grand Stand Arena
Two players on impressive winning streaks will meet in the final with everything on the line. Iga Swiatek defeated Aryna Sabalenka in her semifinal match to win her 27th match in a row.
Iga Swiatek once again proved that she is head and shoulders above the rest of the WTA world. Aryna Sabalenka was thought to be a tough challenge for Swiatek, but Swiatek easily dispatched her 6-2, 6-1.
Sabalenka, who is known for her ferocious power, could not use her pace to fluster or trouble Swiatek.
Sabalenka won only 29% of her first-serve points against Swiatek. She was broken six times.
For Swiatek to continually break one of the WTA's best servers shows how far elevated her return game is compared to the rest of the WTA field.
Ons Jabeur is the 27-year-old Tunisian player ranked number 7 in the world. She's a fine representative of her country and the Arab world.
In the final, one of these impressive streaks will come to an end. Ons Jabeur was pushed to the brink in her semifinal matchup with her good friend Daria Kasatkina.
Jabeur was down to match point at 5-4 in the third but held steady to overcome and finally get the victory 6-4, 1-6, 7-5. Jabeur definitely looked tired towards the end of that match.
Jabeur played last week, while Iga Swiatek took the week off. This is something we must note and will factor into our handicap in the final.
Many around the tennis landscape are encouraged to see her breaking barriers and making the sport even more popular in places where it was once ignored.
Jabeur's dedication to the sport and willingness to always improve her craft has been a wonderful sight to watch.
As her game matures, Jabeur gains more and more fans. She'll have another opportunity to showcase her variety of skills in today's final.
Iga Swiatek will be on top of the WTA world for a while it seems. Swiatek has easily dispatched all challengers.
Right now, it is hard to find a flaw in Swiatek's game, and even harder to find a player that would be able to exploit it.
Unless a new challenger emerges to Swiatek, she looks poised to dominate the WTA in the way that Serena Williams, Steffi Graf, and Martina Navratilova once did. Swiatek looks to be on a historic run.
Ons Jabeur and Iga Swiatek have played three times. Jabeur is 2-1 against Swiatek. Jabeur has won their last two meetings.
Their most recent meeting was last year in Cincinnati, on the ultra-quick hard courts. Their previous meeting was last year's Wimbledon.
Both surfaces are extremely quick and the antithesis of the surface they will play on today. Swiatek's lone win over Jabeur was in Washington, which was another quick surface, to be fair.
The match happened in 2019. Regardless, Swiatek has raised her level at least three to four times above that which she was last year at this point. Will Ons Jabeur be able to similarly raise her level?
As we've stated in the tennis previews all week, it's impossible to find reasons to bet against Iga Swiatek right now.
You wouldn't bet against Serena Williams in 2013, Steffi Graf in 1989, or Martina Navratilova in 1984.
Do not make the mistake of betting against Swiatek right now during this historic run. The oddsmakers simply can't place the betting odds high enough for Swiatek's level of dominance.
Ons Jabeur is also dealing with fatigue on top of all her strategic deficits against Swiatek. Although there will not be a lot of suspense in the outcome of the match, we can enjoy it for reasons of being profitable.
If you like tennis brilliance and cashing tickets, back Swiatek to win the match. Following the WTA odds, our best bet for today's WTA Rome final is Iga Swiatek -4.5 (-117).
