2022 Charleston Open Picks for April 8 (Archive)

Originally published on April 8, 2022

We got through all the scheduled matches yesterday in the WTA Premier 500 event Charleston Open. We have some top seeds and some surprise names remaining in the field.

All the players remaining are in good form, however, so we should have great matches to watch today. Let’s take a look at one of these matches to find a winning tennis pick.

Amanda Anisimova vs. Coco Vandeweghe

Friday, April 08, 2022 – 07:00 PM EDT at Credit One Stadium

Coco Vandeweghe

Coco Vandeweghe didn't even think that she would be in the main draw here at the Charleston Open. Vandeweghe was once a top player but injuries have robbed her of the playing level in which she once played. The thirty-year-old American is working her way back, but it's been a tough road with all the new, young, talented players coming on tour.

Vandeweghe lost in qualifying to Gabriela Lee, who is world number 259. Vandeweghe thought she was going home until withdrawals allowed her to enter the event as a lucky loser. Coco Vandeweghe has made the most of her opportunity since, defeating Anastasia Gasanova, Lauren Davis, and Jessica Pegula.

The win over Pegula was particularly impressive as Pegula has been one of the top players in the WTA tour for the last 6 months. For Vandeweghe to get a victory over such a strong player shows that there is still hope Vandeweghe can return to the top of the WTA.

Family of Athletes

Coco Vandeweghe is an impressive American athlete who stands 6 ft 1. Vandeweghe has said she is better at basketball but she knew that tennis was where the money was. Vandeweghe is well known because her uncle is famous basketball player Kiki Vandeweghe. Her grandfather, Ernie Vandeweghe played in the NBA as well.

The American comes from a long lineage of successful athletes. She declined multiple offers for basketball scholarships to become a top tennis player. At her best, Coco Vandeweghe was ranked number 9 in the world.

She has an aggressive playing style that, at first glance, doesn't seem like it would be well-suited to clay. However, she is so powerful with her serve and groundstrokes that she can hit through most opponents on this surface.

At her age, with a little less quickness in her step, the clay actually allows her more time to set up shots on the groundstrokes. So while the clay is slower, her power allows her to hit through her opponents and she has more time to properly set up her shots.

In 2018, Coco Vandeweghe suffered from a severe viral infection that limited her travel. Upon being able to play again, she focused on doubles and was successful there, lifting a Grand Slam trophy with Ash Barty at the US Open in 2018. Even in times of turmoil, Coco Vandeweghe found a way to make her career a success.

Unfortunately, at Wimbledon in 2018, she suffered a serious ankle injury that kept her out for most of the beginning of 2019. At this point, she struggled to return to her old form and has been in and out of the tour with injuries ever since. Vandeweghe hopes that her body can hold up for one last run at WTA greatness.

Amanda Anisimova

Amanda Anisimova is a young, up-and-coming player that plays a powerful style as well. Anisimova has been the source of controversy this year as she split with successful coach Darren Cahill right before Indian Wells. She struggled against Leylah Fernandez in Indian Wells and retired after the second set.

She also struggled against Shelby Rogers and lost in the first round of the Miami Open. Anisimova has found her form here, however, defeating Sachia Vickery, Yulia Putintseva, and Aryna Sabalenka to make the quarterfinals. Anisimova is only 20 years old and is one of the best prospects the Americans have in WTA tennis.

Amanda Anisimova and Coco Vandeweghe have similar playing styles. Anisimova is much younger and quicker than Vandeweghe with more court coverage at this point in their careers. Vandeweghe will need to rely on guile to get things done against the athletic Anisimova. But don't let her age fool you, Coco Vandeweghe is still a brilliant athlete in her own right.

Amanda Anisimova is heavily favored by WTA odds and rightfully so. Anisimova has had a lot of success on the tour in the past year when Coco Vandeweghe has struggled to stay on the court. I don't think that there is any value in attacking the side in this match, instead, I think the total is the way to go.

WTA Charleston Pick

This match will resemble a men's match in that both women will hold serve quite regularly. This match will feature two of the biggest serves on the WTA tour. Amanda Anisimova and Coco Vandeweghe can dial-up huge power on their serves, and only a low first-serve percentage will make them vulnerable to being broken.

While I believe Anisimova probably wins, the over is the best bet here, as we will see plenty of service winners and plenty of aces. Our best bet for today's WTA Charleston Open is Amanda Anisimova/Coco Vandeweghe Over 19 games.
