Both the Remote Gambling Association and the European Gaming & Betting Association welcomed the decision taken by the European Commission to investigate the restrictions placed on foreign gambling operators in the Netherlands and Greece.
Clive Hawkswood, Chief Executive of the RGA, commented: "Coming on the heels of its decision in January to take similar action against Germany and Sweden, this should send a strong signal across Europe that protectionism in the gambling sector will not be tolerated."
Sigrid Ligné, Secretary General of the EGBA, added: "Today’s reasoned opinions send a clear signal that national gaming legislation, which does not serve any genuine consumer protection or public order interest, has no future. Leading European online operators are now calling on Greece and the Netherlands to implement sustainable reforms that will guarantee a fair, open and regulated market access."
Elsewhere, Congressman George Miller, Chairman of the House Democratic Policy Committee, signed on as the 46th co-sponsor of Barney Frank's IGREA.
