23-03-2007 Germany has a month to reconsider its ban on internet sports betting

The European Commission told the German regional state governments their current plan for an online gambling ban is inconsistent and disproportionate as it includes online casinos, lotteries and sports betting, but exempts online horse betting.

EU Industry Commissioner Guenter Verheugen said Germany has one month to explain the special treatment given to online horse racing betting sites.

Elsewhere, Sweden’s business newspaper Dagens Industri said the Swedish Government is considering a new gambling legislation to bring Sweden in line with European Free Trade requirements.
