23-02-2007 Remote Gaming Duty to be set at around 2 per cent

The Daily Telegraph reports Chancellor Gordon Brown will announce plans in next month's Budget to encourage the online gambling industry to be regulated and licensed by the UK Government.

Online gambling companies will be able to obtain a UK license and still remain based overseas, avoiding British VAT.

John O'Reilly, Head of eGaming at Ladbrokes, confirmed that if the rate was under 3 per cent, the company would almost certainly sign up for a UK license.

In other news, Bill Mummery, Head of egaming development within the Isle of Man Government, said he will leave his position on March 31 to take up a senior appointment in the private sector.
