22-08-2007 CASA says internet gambling bill is inadequate for South Africa

South Africa's legislators began the examination of the National Gambling Amendment Bill and the Casino Association of South Africa said immediately the draft bill is inadequate in some serious respects and it should be referred back for further research and consultation.

Jabu Mabuza, Chairman of CASA, said internet gambling operators should be subject to the same requirements and tax rates as land-based gambling operators.

Mabuza also said is essential that the interactive gambling legislation is compliant with South Africa's commitments to the WTO.

"Presently, South Africa has some of the world's most effective and well-formulated legislation governing land-based gambling. It stands to reason that legislation for interactive gambling should be as comprehensive and thorough," he said.
