19-12-2004 Betfair has been refused a license in Australia's Northern Territory

Northern Territory Deputy Chief Minister, Sid Stirling, has informed the Australian Racing Board (ARB) that his government, despite recent conjectures, will not consider any licensing application from betting exchanges.

"They were never going to be the first jurisdiction in Australia to license us. That has been clear for ages," Betfair reported. The leading betting exchange expects to obtain a license from other Australian states.

"There is already legislation in place which the national parliament has enacted to deal with gambling over the internet and the terms of this legislation must be revised to prevent betting exchanges from damaging Australian racing," Andrew Ramsden, ARB's chairman, said.

Ramsdem also reaffirmed the ARB's intention to further lobby the Australian Government for action on its part to prevent betting exchanges from operating on Australian racing.
