Round 15: Fuji - Turning Japanese The Fuji Speedway of the 70’s was a super high-speed circuit, with a very long, very fast right-hand bend leading onto such a long home straight that it was used for drag racing. The final corner has recently been redesigned by German, Hermann Tilke, architect of all the circuits to have made their debut’s on the F1 calendar in recent years, and now a series of twists and turns lead the drivers onto the long pits straight at much reduced speed. Formula One suffered a 10 year hiatus in Japan after the fatal accidents in 1977, reappearing at Suzuka in 1987. Twenty years of form at the Honda-owned circuit provide no hints as to the likely winner at the Toyota owned Fuji venue, which provides an even playing field for all participants benefiting rookie drivers not disadvantaged by a lack of experience at the track, a critical point in the Hamilton-Alonso confrontation.
