Unlike every other race on the circuit (with the exception of Istanbul), Interlagos is run in an anti-clockwise direction, meaning that the G-forces affect the drivers in a totally different way, exposing any lack of fitness in the cockpit.

An exhausted Ayrton Senna thrilled the crowds in his home city by winning here in 1991, despite being stuck in sixth gear for the last few laps. Senna had to be lifted from the car at the finish.

Brazilian fans will have two local heroes to cheer in Rubens Barrichello and Felipe Massa. It would be fitting for a season that has thrown up so many surprises, both on and off the track, for the unpredictable weather to once again play a part in the Brazilian Grand Prix. The race is prone to monsoon rain with the design of the circuit meaning that rivers of rain can run across the banked sections of the circuit and cause chaos - as happened in 2003. That year, the race was halted prematurely due to wreckage strewn across the home straight, while confusion with the timing equipment meant that no-one was sure who had won. Jordan’s Giancarlo Fisichella was eventually presented with his first victory trophy at Imola a full two weeks later, by Kimi Raikkonen, who had been mistakenly declared the winner on the day!
