United Kingdom

Description:
The Gambling Act 2005, which is due to become fully operational in September 2007, introduces a new regulatory and licensing framework for internet bookmakers. As of 30 April 2007, the new Gambling Commission, which has taken over the role of the Gaming Board with greater responsibilities and powers, received over 180 applications for remote gambling licenses. Earlier in March 2007, Chancellor Gordon Brown announced the new remote gaming duty had been set at 15 per cent, putting an end to over a year of speculation that wanted the UK Treasury to introduce a tax rate of 2 per cent to induce offshore betting operators to relocate to Britain. The Gambling Act 2005 also introduces a new regulatory framework for gambling advertising. For the first time ever, licensed betting operators will be allowed to advertise on radio and television, while foreign betting sites will not be permitted at all to advertise their services in the UK.
